Visit

• Books are loaned for a 3 week period and may be renewed once for an additional 3 weeks.   

• Magazines are loaned for one week and are not renewable.

• Students may borrow a total of three items with a limit of one magazine. 

• Reference materials do not circulate.

• The fine for overdue items is five cents per day per item. Any student with an overdue book and/or outstanding fine must take care of those obligations before being allowed to borrow another item.

Ebsco Databases can be used by students to conduct research, search, and more.

Sirs Discoverer can be used by students to access articles from magazines, newspapers, and encyclopedias.

Noodletools is used by students to cite resources.

Creating a Noodletools Account

1.  Access Noodletools

2.  Select the "Create a Personal ID" button.

Before you create an account, enter the password "noodle1" so that the Randolph Middle School subscription is enabled.

3.  To create an account enter the following information:

Personal ID: student ID# (check availability, if not available add the first initial of your last name)

Password: PIN number

4.  Complete the rest of the form: Year of Graduation (High School), your initials and the last four digits of a phone number that you will remember.

5.  Before you start a works cited list, you must select “MLA” and the “Jr.” level of Noodletools.

Search Engines & Website Validity

Finding information is only one part of research. To become “information literate,” students must first be able to determine whether information is accurate and helpful for what they are doing. Students then must be able to put the information to effective use.

When using the Internet for research, students must evaluate the validity of any website they visit. The following criteria should be used to help determine whether a particular site is reliable.

Authority

• Who is responsible for this information?
• Is the author a well-known person or organization?
• Does the author have the appropriate background to discuss this topic?
• Can you access biographical and contact information (phone number, address, email)?
• Did you link to this site from a trustworthy site?

Bias

• Is it clear what organization is sponsoring the web page?
• Is there a link to the sponsoring organization's web site?
• Is the information presented mostly fact or mostly opinion?

Date

• When was the website created?
• When was the information last updated?

Knowledge

• Does the information on the site fit in with what you already know about the subject?

Mechanics

• Is the website well written with proper spelling and grammar usage?
