Share the Keys

Program Information 

In April 2007, the Randolph Township Board of Education amended its student parking policy to require both a parent/guardian and a provisional student driver to attend the National Safety Council's Share the Keys Teen Driver Safety Program before a senior may apply for a parking permit.

Designed to promote safe driving habits, the initiative emphasizes parent-teen communication and the gradual expansion of driving privileges through New Jersey's Graduated Driver License (GDL) system. It also complements the driver education curriculum taught through the Health and Physical Education Department during sophomore year. Goals include:

  • Increase awareness of teen driving risks through research-based information and data.
  • Provide practical strategies to help reduce teen driving risks and promote safe driving habits.
  • Encourage parent-teen communication and partnership throughout the transition from supervised to independent driving.

2026-27 Schedule

The virtual Share the Keys sessions will be held on the following dates. All sessions begin at 6:30 PM.

  • Monday, Nov. 16, 2026
  • Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2027
  • Tuesday, March 16, 2027

Registration

To receive credit for attending the program, pre-registration is required. The registration link will be available on the website prior to each event and also distributed through a District email communication. Participants must register using their RTNJ email accounts to ensure accurate attendance tracking. Any schedule changes or cancellations will be posted on the website

Following feedback from parents who wished they had received this information earlier in their teen's driving experience, the district partnered with the Randolph Police Department and Traffic Safety Committee to ensure that both parents and their teens attend this 90-minute session together. Attending as a team helps families develop a shared understanding of safe driving practices, expectations and responsibilities.
