Share the Keys

Parents/Guardians,

In April 2007, the Randolph Township Board of Education amended the pupil parking policy to mandate the attendance of a parent/guardian and the provisional student driver at the National Safety Council Teen Driver Safety Program – Share the Keys – prior to an RHS senior applying for a senior parking permit. The Share the Keys program compliments the curriculum taught during the 30 hours of Driver Education Theory taught by our Health and Physical Education Department during Sophomore year.

Program Goals

1. Inform family members about the risks of teen driving based on solid, scientific evidence.

2. Provide practical advice about strategies that the National Safety Council believes may reduce the risks of teen driving.

3. Encourage parent-teen cooperation and involvement throughout the entire process from learning to drive through independent driving.

The program focuses on parent-teen communications and contracting incremental driving privileges via the Graduated Driver’s License, which is detailed during the program. Strong recommendations have come from parents indicating that they wished they had the information from the program earlier in the teen-driver process-prior to age 16. Parents have also indicated that they wish they were encouraged to bring their teen with them to the program. For that reason, we are in agreement with the Police Department and the Traffic Safety Committee in recommending that parents/guardians attend the one-and-a-half-hour program with their teen(s).

There are four programs scheduled for the upcoming school year, Tuesday, August 29, 2023 – Monday, November 13, 2023 – Monday, January 29, 2024 – Monday, March 4, 2024. These programs are all scheduled to be offered virtually at 6:30 pm.

Alerts will be sent as a reminder prior to each session. The Alert will also include a link to register. Any changes or cancellations will be posted on the website. Questions related to the Share the Keys program may be directed to the Health/Physical Education Supervisor, Marybeth Foran. Any questions related to parking at the high school may be directed to Vice Principal Mike Sorge.
