Share the Keys

In April 2007, the Board of Education amended the pupil parking policy to mandate the attendance of a parent/guardian and the provisional student driver at the National Safety Council Teen Driver Safety Program Share the Keys. Attendance is required prior to a Randolph High School senior submitting an application for a senior parking permit. The program complements the curriculum taught in Driver Education Theory during a student's sophomore year of high school.

Program Goals

1. Inform family members about the risks of teen driving based on solid, scientific evidence.
2. Provide practical advice about strategies that the National Safety Council believes may reduce the risks of teen driving.
3. Encourage parent-teenager cooperation and involvement throughout the entire process from learning to drive through independent driving.

The program focuses on parent-teenager communications and contracting incremental driving privileges via the Graduated Driver’s License. Strong recommendations have come from parents indicating that they wished they had the information from the program prior to their child turning 16. Parents have also indicated that they wish they were encouraged to bring their teenager with them to the program. For that reason, we are in agreement with the Police Department and the Traffic Safety Committee in recommending that parents/guardians attend the one and a half hour program with their teenager.

There are four programs scheduled for the upcoming school year, Monday, September 12, 2022 – Monday, November 7, 2022 – Monday, January 9, 2023 – Monday, March 6, 2023. These programs are all scheduled to be offered virtually at 6:30 PM. Mass notification will be sent as a reminder prior to each scheduled session. Any changes or cancellations will be posted. No advance registration is required for these sessions.
