Roof Replacements
Shongum Elementary and Ironia Elementary will have full roof replacements due to extensive wear and tear. At Shongum Elementary, the roof is “ponding” which is a term to describe improper roof drainage which leads to stagnant puddles of water. All roof drains will be rebuilt with new drains outside, and the roofs will be sloped to help the drainage system. New code requires roofs to have a thicker layer of materials. The extra insulation will improve energy efficiency which will help keep the building warmer during the winter and cooler during the summer.
At Ironia Elementary, the roof is also experiencing “ponding” and has had significant patchwork to repair ongoing damage. The skylights on the roof will be removed as they often leak, eliminating this concern completely long-term. Ironia’s roof will also have a thick layer of material to assist with temperature control.
