    Mrs. Nields

    September 2016

Well we have made it through our first week of school successfully! We had so much fun getting to know each other. We did many fun activities and have been very productive!  There are many things hanging for you all to see on Back To School Night.

I am including information that will allow you to sign up for an app which will send alerts directly to your cell phone via a text message.  It is called Remind.  The directions to sign up will also be sent home on Monday with your child.  It will allow us to communicate immediately.  It will also allow me to send reminders of assignments, conferences, field trips, etc.  I ask that everyone sign up via text message or email.  See below for instructions. If you are having a difficult time signing up, please email me at lnields@rtnj.org and I will assist you with the process.  I will get an alert when you sign on as well.

This coming week we will be diving right into our curriculum.  For updates on specific subjects, see the information below.

The Center Grove Carnival will be held on September 23rd at 4:30.  The rain date will be September 30th.

Be sure to mark your calendar for Sept. 22nd at 7!  I look forward to meeting you all in our classroom for the presentation about the school year.

    See you soon!

    Love, Mrs. Nields

    What's New in Room 121!!

Here are the highlights for our upcoming week:

Reading: This week we will be reading Miss Nelson is Missing.  It is a cute story that will allow for much discussion.  The discussions will be followed by several different activities.

Writing: Our first writing assignment for the year will be all about our summer adventures.  It will be very exciting to read all the fun things we all did the last few months while on summer break!  Our classroom summer selfies will also be hanging in our classroom for you to see during back to school night.

Math: It is important for me to get a baseline of each student before beginning unit 1 in Everyday Math.  I will be administering the Beginning of year Assessment on Monday and possibly Tuesday of next week depending upon how long it takes each day.  This is not a test that goes home but rather is just to gather information.   Wednesday we will begin instruction on Unit 1.  The formal homelink assignments will not begin until 1.10 so in the meantime, I will be sending home practice worksheets in the meantime.

Science: Our first unit for sciecne is Solids, Liquids, and Gas.  It is a fun program and VERY hands on!  We will be building many creative things. We will begin creating our Science Journals on Wednesday.  If your child does not have a composition book in class, please send them in with one by then.  We will be communicating with each other daily in science.  I utilize a penpal approach in the journal where we write back and forth about daily lessons learned.  The children look forward to reading the messages I write back to them.  The journal does not usually go home as all the assessments are based on strategies demonstrated in class.  Be sure to ask your child about their science experience! It makes for great dinner conversations!

Social Studies: Mrs. Miller will have updates for Social Studies.
