May/June They’re in the home stretch! We recognize that call at every Kentucky Derby when those magnificent thoroughbreds drive toward the finish line each May. The school year reminds me of this race as we head for the finish line as well. Just as with the Derby every student needs to extend every effort to achieve at the highest level. Every parent and teacher is a screaming fan urging on the students. The excitement is peaking. May will see many exciting peaks. The 7th and 8th grade students just finished their NJASK. Our 6th grade students will complete NJASK very soon. The teachers have done all that is possible to prepare the students, now it is simply up to them to perform at the levels we know they are capable. NJASK is not the only measure of success for our school. Report Card grades are just as meaningful to us as our teachers measure and report the growth students have demonstrated over the course of the year. Performances are another means of measuring our success. The Performing and Visual Arts department will be exhibiting the achievement of students in music and art. We enter our spring concert season with much anticipation for great concerts performed by our students in chorus, orchestra, band and our ensembles. The art students will soon display their works. The skill and imagination of the students is amazing. Check your calendars and keep an eye on the web site for information about other end of year events. We will welcome our incoming classes for Orientation to the middle school. While the rumors of frightening middle schools will always persist, the reality in Randolph is much different. Students will be met by caring faculty members who will guide them through their first year and nurture the many developing talents of the children. We have completed our Advisory program for this year. The feedback from students was very valuable and positive. Several Advisory groups undertook Service Learning projects and have contributed greatly to the school. The 8th grade students collected money to create a Veterans’ Walk through our courtyard. I am looking forward to the dedication ceremony. The home stretch also marks the end of our time with these 8th grade students. I’ve only had the pleasure of working with them for one year but I have come to see so much great potential in them. From their academic performance to their social concern they are a fantastic group of students. The end of year activities planned for the students should be exciting and fun times for them to remember. We will start June with Field Days. Then we have our 8th grade Farewell Dance on June 5th. Our 8th grade trip is scheduled for June 9th and our Promotion ceremony will be held on June 19th. Headed for the wire the Randolph Middle School will be a heart pounding hotbed of activity. I look forward to seeing you here to participate and support your children. Joseph Miceli, Ed.D. Principal
